Reason for the Award:

Marchigiano of the Year in the World

Dionisio Cimarelli, through his prolific work in China, has built a bridge between Western and Eastern cultures, expressing a deeply personal vision of art. A distinctive feature of his work is the extraordinary ability to fuse Italian sculptural tradition with Chinese porcelain. Deeply connected to his Marchigiano origins, yet a tireless traveler, Dionisio finds inspiration in the places he visits and the nature that surrounds him.
Recognized as an artist of international renown, the New York Academy of Art also acknowledged his capacity to transform the world of the arts.

Mr. Cimarelli is an accomplished artist with an international reputation for achievements in sculpture, as well as teaching, mentorship, and outreach…..

I would like to discuss a project Dionisio and I had planned in connection with the Metropolitan Museum’s current exhibition Michelangelo: Divine Craftsman and Designer…..In Dionisio Cimarelli,

I found such a professional figure: his knowledge of classical sculpture and traditional techniques, his experience in the fabrication of large-scale sculptures, and his understanding of modern technology ensured that he could assist me and the museum in this all important project….His talent, knowledge, and intellectual curiosity are indeed rare and make him a wonderful colleague and research partner.

I know and profoundly admire Sculptor Dionisio Cimarelli and his outstanding work. Cimarelli's artistic talents link East and West in a very subtle way. But they also translate a strong statement as the sophistication of Chinese and Italian cultures are synchronized in a manner that the classical and the contemporary become one.

The uniqueness of his sculptures will always inspire.

His work epitomizes new directions taken by contemporary art and will certainly inspire future generations to come. We worked together on many occasions as Dionisio Cimarelli was my art consultant for various architectural and interior projects I realized in Japan. Always in a positive mood and always looking forward! I observed and highly appreciated his dedication, enthusiasm, and professionalism.

The sculptor's high professional profile is indisputable, as evidenced by a long international experience spanning America, Asia, and Europe. Mr. Cimarelli offered us a very interesting and exciting lecture in excellent English regarding his experience in sculptural restoration and in his own career as a Fine Art sculptor. From his lecture and slides of his oeuvre, I could recognize that

Mr. Cimarelli has developed tremendous skill in traditional carving, and is also a considerable authority on Renaissance sculpture.

Dr. Elmar Weingarten
Former Director

Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra

Berlin, Germany

...Claudio Abbado and I decided that these works should not only be displayed in Potsdam but also shown to the visitors of the Philharmonie, now among the beautiful drawings and sculptures.

What fascinates us about Dionisio's work? He has taken the reverse path….and what he achieves is truly extraordinary. These are sculptures with great internal radiance; characters unfold with an unmistakable personality. But also the drawings. For the sculptor, drawings are stages along the path to sculpture. In Dionisio’s case, they are, first and foremost, proof of excellent art. They do not fumble but offer, each time, a convincing account of a stage in his search process. They are colored even when no color is present, and they are significant companions to the sculptures. We are grateful and glad that we have been able to offer you, dear Dionisio, the opportunity here at the Berliner Philharmonie to show us some stages of your search.
